Preserving Legacy: Community Unites to Defend the Future of Ligon High School

This past week, a powerful show of unity echoed through the streets of Southeast Raleigh as The Men of Southeast Raleigh stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Ligon High School alumni and community advocates. Together, we gathered to voice our deep concerns about proposed changes to Ligon High School — changes being planned without meaningful input from those who know and love this institution best.

Ligon High School is more than just a building. It is a beacon of Black excellence, history, and pride. For generations, it has stood as a symbol of resilience, achievement, and progress in the face of adversity. Its halls have shaped leaders, scholars, and changemakers. Its legacy belongs not only to the alumni but to the entire City of Raleigh, Wake County, and the state of North Carolina.

Any changes to this school must reflect the voices and values of the community it has served so faithfully. Decisions made in boardrooms must first be grounded in the wisdom of those who’ve walked its halls, taught its students, and preserved its legacy.

We are calling on everyone who understands the cultural and historical significance of Ligon High School to stand with us. Your support is vital. Whether you are a former student, a local resident, an educator, or simply someone who believes in honoring our shared history — your voice matters.
