Our History

The Men of Southeast Raleigh: Men of Courage, Confidence & Class held their first meeting on June 25, 2021 after several months of dialogue between Co-Founders Anthony Pope and Alex Craven. Joni Craven-Jeffries had approached us about organizing and engaging a group of men who were interested inserving, supporting and advocating for our historically “black communities” where we were raised and lived.

After speaking with other brothers, who also grew up in Southeast Raleigh and surrounding communities, we decided toorganize. To our surprise, we had 20 men to attend our first meeting. Most of us were already acquainted by our early years of attending the same schools, churches, parks and other community events. Many of these bonds and friendships havebeen maintained over the years although the geographics of our communities have changed dramatically due to gentrification. We grew up during the era of “Segregation” and for most of usour relationships and interactions were limited to ourcommunities.

During our first meeting, the men engaged in meaningful conversation, shared ideas, made suggestions / comments, gave feedback, and addressed other relevant issues. During our 2nd meeting on July 25, 2021 we had more men to join, at which time we established the group’s Mission, Motto and Mantra.

This is the history of “The Men of Southeast Raleigh” and howour journey to serve, support and advocate for our Southeast Raleigh Communities began.
